Learning outcomes for undergraduate students

Environmental Geoscience Majors

Environmental Geoscience majors will be able to:

1. Describe and apply basic Earth and environmental scientific concepts and information.
2. Collect and interpret quantitative Earth and environmental scientific data.
3. Think critically about scientific aspects of challenges currently facing society.
4. If this is their goal, enter graduate or professional school in environmental science, policy, law, or other related fields.
5. If this is their goal, obtain a job or internship in a field related to the environmental sciences.

Geological Sciences Majors

Majors in Geological Sciences will:

1. Be able to think critically about scientific problems in the geological sciences, and have basic knowledge of the nature of geological materials and the structure of the Earth.
2. Have basic knowledge of the geological processes that form rocks and shape the Earth鈥檚 landscape, and understand how Earth history and past environments are reconstructed using geological, geochemical, and geophysical methods.
3. Understand the concept of geologic time, the processes that form and shape the Earth's lithospheric systems, and the theory of plate tectonics.
4. Understand geological and geophysical maps and perform geological and/or geophysical field investigations.
5. Collect, analyze, and interpret qualitative and quantitative scientific data in the geological sciences.
6. If this is their goal, enter graduate or professional school in geological sciences, environmental science, policy, law or other related fields.
7. If this is their goal, obtain a job or internship in a field related to the geological sciences.

Learning outcomes for graduate studies

Upon completion of an M.S., graduates should be able to:

1. Conduct original, publishable research in the field.聽
2. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of earth processes.聽
3. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a sub-discipline in the earth sciences.聽
4. Demonstrate acquired skill in field or laboratory methods and application of appropriate quantitative methods.聽
5. Write and speak effectively to professional and lay audiences about issues in the field.聽
6. Teach effectively at the K-12 and undergraduate levels.

Upon completion of a Ph.D., graduates should be able to:聽

1. Formulate, conduct, and publish original research in the field.
2. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of Earth processes.
3. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of one or more sub-disciplines in the Earth sciences.
4. Demonstrate acquired skill in field or laboratory methods and application of appropriate quantitative methods.
5. Write and speak effectively to professional and lay audiences about issues in the field.
6. Teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
